The Importance of Water Baptism

Jesus gave the church two visible symbols (called "ordinances") as reminders of His death. These two ordinances are Baptism and the Lord's Supper. He asks us to practice these things in remembrance of Him.

Why Should I be Baptized?

  • 1. To follow the example set by Jesus.
    • "At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was Baptized by John in the Jordan." Mark 1:9
  • 2. Because Christ commands it.
    • "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
  • 3. It demonstrates that I really am a Believer.
    • "...Many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized." Acts 18:8b

What is the Meaning of Baptism?

  • 1. It illustrates Christ's burial and resurrection.
    • "Christ died for our sins...He was buried...and He was raised on the third day according to scriptures." 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
    • "Having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead." Colossians 2:12
  • 2. It illustrates my commitment as a Christian.
    • "Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins...Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” Acts 2:38a; 41
  • 3. It illustrates the you have repent and the you have new life.
    • "He (John the Baptist) went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." Luke 3:3
    • "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." Romans 6:4

Is Baptism necessary for Salvation?

Baptism doesn't make you a believer - it shows that you already believe. Baptism does not "save" you; only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring - it's the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart.
  • "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith...it is the gift of God - not by works, sot hat no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
  • Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." Mark 16:16

Why be Baptized by Immersion?

  • 1. Because Jesus was baptized that way.
    • "As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water." Matthew 3:16
  • 2. Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion.
    • "...then both Phillip and the Eunuch went down into he water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water..." Acts 8:38b-39a
  • 3. The word Baptize ("Baptize in the original Greek) means "to immerse or dip under water.
  • 4. It best symbolizes Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.

Who Should Be Baptized?

  • 1. Every person who has accepted Christ.
    • "Those who accepted His message were baptized..." Acts 2:41
    • "But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." Acts 8:12

When Should I be Baptized?

  • 1. As soon as you believe!
    • "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on His name." Acts 22:16
    • "Those who accepted His message were baptized...that day!" Acts 2:41

Baptism at ALC

At Abundant Life Church, we wait until our children our old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.

While it is important to dedicate a child to God, and child dedication is practiced at ALC, we do not consider it Baptism. This is because it is different from the Baptism talked about in the Bible, which was only for those old enough to believe. The purpose of baptism is to publicly confess your personal commitment to follow Jesus.
